Highway Travel
The Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) runs through Newfoundland west to east from Port aux Basques to St. John's, for a distance of 905 kilometers. Rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador are accessible via secondary highways and roads. Secondary highways along the route offer many intriguing, "off-the-beaten-path" trips.

Travel Route 500 on a gravel road that runs through Labrador from Happy Valley-Goose Bay in the east to Labrador City/Wabush in the west. The distance is approximately 525 kilometers and travel time is approximately 9 hours. In spring, the road is occasionally soft and travelable only by four-wheel drive vehicles. For a recorded message on road conditions between Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Churchill Falls, telephone 1-709-896-5840. For information on the road between Churchill Falls and Labrador City, telephone 1-709-282-3406. From Labrador West on a partially paved Route 389, you can drive into Quebec to Baie Comeau on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River for a distance of 581 kilometers. Expected travel time is approximately 8.5 hours.

The Department of Works, Services and Transportation provides the motoring public in the province with the most up-to-date road and driving conditions through digital cameras which are installed at five weigh scale sites along the Trans Canada Highway. All 5 cameras are available online at www.gov.nl.ca/roads/.
